Volume

Volume occupied by the entered mass at the stated density.

Relation and numerical substitutionρ = m / V

—

Mass, volume and density are positive scalar quantities describing a uniform average density.

01Formulas and symbols

Formulas used

ρρ = m / VDensity from mass divided by volume.
mm = ρ × VMass from density multiplied by volume.
VV = m / ρVolume from mass divided by density.
02Assumptions and limits

Scope of validity

  • Mass, volume and density are positive scalar quantities describing a uniform average density.
03Validation example

Reference numerical case

  1. m = 2 kg and V = 0.002 m³ give ρ = 1000 kg/m³. Conversely ρ = 1000 kg/m³ and V = 0.002 m³ give m = 2 kg.

FAQ

Is density the same as mass?

No. Mass measures the amount of matter; density relates that mass to the volume it occupies through ρ = m/V.

How do g/cm³ and kg/m³ compare?

1 g/cm³ equals 1000 kg/m³. The unit selector performs the conversion before calculation.

05Relating mass, volume and density

Density is the ratio of mass to volume. Rearranging ρ = m/V gives m = ρV and V = m/ρ, so any one of the three quantities can be obtained from the other two.

06Limits and conventions

The result is an average bulk density. The calculator does not model mixtures, porosity, temperature dependence, compressibility or spatial density gradients.

07Common mistakes

Keep mass and volume units consistent through the selectors. Do not confuse density in kg/m³ with specific gravity, which is dimensionless.
