Formulas used

R

R = p × B / 100

Percentage amount from a base value.

p

p = P / B × 100

Part as a percentage of the base.

T

T = P × 100 / p

Total recovered from a known part.

Δ%

Δ% = (V₁ − V₀) / V₀ × 100

Signed relative change between two values.

Reference numerical case

  1. 15% of 240 = 36; 36 is 15% of 240; if 36 is 15%, the total is 240; 240 → 276 is a +15% change.
03How percentage calculations work

Convert a percentage p to the factor p/100. For percentage change, subtract the initial value first, divide by the initial value, then multiply by 100.

04Limits and conventions

The calculator performs arithmetic percentage relations only. It does not infer tax rules, discounts, financial compounding or statistical percentages.

05Common mistakes

For percentage change, always use the initial value as the denominator. A decrease therefore appears as a negative percentage.

06Practical questions

What is the difference between percentage and percentage change?

A percentage compares a part with a base. Percentage change compares a new value with an initial value and keeps the sign of the increase or decrease.

Why can’t the reference value be zero?

A percentage ratio requires division by the reference value. Division by zero is undefined.
